What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a widely-used measure that helps determine whether a person has a healthy body weight for their height. It is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.
How to Use This Calculator
Enter your weight in kilograms or pounds, and your height in centimeters or feet and inches. Click "Calculate" to instantly see your BMI result along with your weight category.
BMI Formula
Metric: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]²
Imperial: BMI = 703 × weight (lbs) / [height (in)]²
BMI Categories
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 - 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 - 29.9
- Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
Limitations
While BMI is a useful screening tool, it does not directly measure body fat or account for muscle mass, bone density, or overall body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may have a high BMI despite having low body fat.
